What Is a Ductless AC System?

Ductless AC systems are similar to standard, central AC systems. However, they don not have ductwork which guides cool air through vents throughout a home. Instead, ductless systems have small blower fans that are within the indoor component of the system, which blow cool air locally throughout a space.

Ductless AC systems still have an outdoor unit, or condenser (which condenses the coolant fluid). The condenser uses a fan and compressor to transform the coolant to a liquid state. Condensed fluid is cycled through the indoor unit where it evaporates (in the evaporator coils), pulling heat from the surrounding air. This cooled air is then fanned throughout the room of the indoor unit. Then, the coolant cycles back through the system to repeat the process.

Ductless systems are often outfitted with an internal thermostat, and may be connected to an external thermostat, which will trigger the AC unit to turn on as necessary, per your preferred comfort settings.

The Benefits of Ductless AC Systems

Ductless systems are ideal for a few types of homes, and under certain conditions. As we mentioned, if you have a smaller home, you may only need a small unit to keep your space cool. Or, perhaps you only need to cool your bedroom to get restful sleep at night — a ductless system may be sufficient to provide that comfort.

You may also live in a condo or apartment that is above ground-level. It may prove easier to install a ductless system, since the condenser unit is smaller than that of a central AC system (which is usually installed on the ground).

Ductless AC systems are also ideal for retrofitting homes, since you won’t have to install ductwork throughout the space in order to force air through the home. We can simply install a wall-mounted unit for the space that you need to have cooled, and we’ll only need to drill a small hole through your wall in order to install the unit — you won’t have to tear through walls to install ductwork.

If, however, you’re cooling a larger home, we may recommend that you install a split system with multiple zones, or it may be best to install a central AC unit (central AC systems are, in general, more efficient than ductless and split systems).

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT UNIT

If you’re installing a new ductless system in your home, you may be curious about the right unit size for your space. We’ve created a rough guideline for unit sizes, according to the amount of space that you’ll need to cool. Ductless systems are rated by BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour, which means that the unit can cool a space by a certain amount of BTUs in a given hour while the unit is running.

AC UNIT SIZE GUIDELINES FOR CONNECTICUT:

  • 150 to 250 square foot spaces: 6,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 250 to 300 square foot spaces: 7,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 300 to 350 square foot spaces: 8,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 350 to 400 square foot spaces: 9,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 400 to 450 square foot spaces: 10,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 450 to 550 square foot spaces: 12,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 500 to 700 square foot spaces: 14,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 700 to 1,000 square foot spaces: 18,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 1,000 to 1,200 square foot spaces: 21,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 1,200 to 1,400 square foot spaces: 23,000 cooling BTUs per hour
  • 1,400 to 1,500 square foot spaces*: 24,000 cooling BTUs per hour

* Spaces larger than 1,500 square feet may require multiple zones/cooling units.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

While these guidelines may prove perfect for your space, be mindful that you may have more or less demand, depending on the use of the space, the insulation of the space, and the height of your ceilings. If you’re constantly coming and going from the space, or, for example, if you have an oven in the space that you’re cooling, then you’ll need a larger unit. If you have excellent insulation in your space, then you may need a smaller unit. Large ceilings? Then consider upgrading your unit size.
