Common HVAC Issues

Problems with the thermostat: If you’re having problems with your thermostat, then you may need a new unit, you may need to repair an electrical issue, or you may need to have your unit calibrated. Your thermostat should accurately measure the temperature of the air, and it should turn on your heating or cooling unit if the temperature slips outside of a given range. If you have a poorly calibrated thermostat, a thermostat that has an electrical problem, or a thermostat that has simply died, we can fix the issue at hand. We’d be happy to repair or replace your thermostat.

AC unit issues: Your air conditioner is relatively complex, with a variety of components that are liable to fail over the lifetime of the unit. You could have an electrical issue, your compressor could fail, a fan could fail, you could have a refrigerant leak, or you may have a frozen evaporator coil — among other issues. If you have an electrical issue, your AC unit may not turn on at all, or it may only work partially (for example, the blower fan may not come on). If your compressor fails, your AC unit will lose the ability to cool the air that is circulated through your home. Your compressor compresses the refrigerant, which enables the evaporator coil to cool the air around the coil as the refrigerant cycles through the system — if your compressor fails you may need to invest in a new AC unit (since this is a rather expensive part). If your fan fails, you will not feel any cold air pumping through your vents, even if the AC unit is whirring — you should turn your AC unit off until we can perform a repair, since the evaporator coil can freeze over. If you have a frozen evaporator coil, you could lose the efficiency of your AC unit, and your unit will eventually be damaged by freezing. If you are experiencing any of these issues and you find yourself without cool, comfortable air, you can reach out to our Bristol team for emergency AC services.

Furnace issues: Your furnace is liable to fail for a variety of reasons. You may lose your pilot light, your automatic ignition may fail, you may have an electrical issue, or you may have a broken blower fan, to name a few of the most common issues. If your pilot light is out or your automatic ignition has failed, then your furnace won’t be able to heat. You can follow the instructions on your furnace or in your owner’s manual to relight your pilot light (if you have a pilot light). If your pilot light won’t stay ignited, or if you have an issue with your automatic ignition, you should turn your furnace off, shut off the gas supply, and reach out to an HVAC expert to pinpoint the problem and to provide a repair. If you have an electrical issue, your furnace may not turn on at all, or your fan may not click on. You may also have a broken fan motor, which can be replaced. If you’re experiencing an issue like those mentioned above, it’s best to turn off the gas supply to your furnace and to turn off the furnace as you wait for service from a professional.

Boiler and radiator issues: If you’re looking at an issue with your boiler or radiator, you may need emergency services, since your home can begin to lose precious warmth very quickly. You may have a radiator system with low water pressure, you may be experiencing boiler “kettling,” or you may have an electrical problem that is keeping your boiler from turning on, among other issues. If you have low pressure throughout your radiator system, then your heating system may be inefficient or it may fail to heat your home altogether. It’s likely that you have a leak somewhere along your radiator line. In addition, if you have a blockage throughout your system or your boiler is constantly running due to another issue, you may experience kettling, where your boiler will create steam, which will create a whistling sound similar to that of a kettle. If you have low pressure throughout your system or you hear boiler kettling, then you should turn off your boiler and reach out to a professional to assess the situation — you may need to repair or replace your boiler, or you may need to have work performed on the plumbing of your radiator line.

Emergency Service FAQ

When should I call for emergency HVAC services?

If you have lost all heating or cooling capabilities of an HVAC unit, give us a call. Also, if you’re worried about the safety of your unit, you can reach out to us right away. For example, if you are hearing loud noises, or the gas of your furnace is no longer igniting, then you may have an urgent issue on your hands. Please shut down your unit (and turn off the gas for gas furnaces) if you feel your unit is dangerous, and give us a call.

How can I restart my pilot light?

If you have a furnace with a pilot light (not an automatic ignition), which remains lit to ignite the burners of your furnace, you can attempt to relight the pilot light if it goes out. Be cautious, however, because you should not have gas built up in your home if you are attempting to light the pilot. Be sure to turn your pilot to the “Off” position, and leave the room for five minutes as any residual gas dissipates, before you attempt to light the pilot. You should not be able to smell gas when you’re lighting the pilot. Once five minutes have passed, you can turn the pilot control to the “Pilot” mode, as you use a long lighter to ignite the tip of the pilot. If the pilot gas ignites and remains lit, you can turn the pilot control knob to the “On” position, and you can test your furnace by turning it on at the thermostat. If you still cannot light your pilot light, reach out to a professional for help.
